Saints Peter & Paul Church

Saints Peter & Paul Church
You get two saints for the price of one at this end of Washington Square Park because this church here is the Church of Saint Peter and Paul. And it's quite often, actually, that these two saints are celebrated together because the anniversary of their deaths is on the same day, June 29th. Well, the church has also been named the marzipan church due to its wedding cake-like facade and twin towers. We have some beautiful decorations on the inside of the church also, like the stained-glass Rose window there, some 14 foot across on the entrance side of the building. And here on the other side of the building, we have the beautiful altar, and that's made out of white Carrara marble especially imported from Italy. And if you take a look to the bottom, you can see a sculptural recreation of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper. The church was constructed between 1912 and 1924, which seems like an awful long time, over a decade. But that's because it was interrupted by the First World War. And when the war broke out, construction ground to a halt. They had only at that point, built the very lower level of the church. So for the next few years, services had to take place in the only bit that was finished, and that was down below in the basement. In the 1950s, the church became famous for being the place where Marilyn Monroe married North Beach local and baseball legend, Joe Dimaggio. But actually, they didn't get married inside here at all. It's all a bit of a myth because they were actually both divorced from previous marriages. So they weren't allowed to get married again inside a Catholic church. So what they did was, they went to the City Hall, had their civic ceremony there, and then they came to the church afterwards to have some lovely photos taken outside here.
