7 Columbus Tower / Sentinel Building

Columbus Tower / Sentinel Building

Columbus Tower / Sentinel Building
Just across the street here, you have The Columbus Tower, also known as The Sentinel Building. It's a real iconic landmark of San Francisco with its copper cupola and copper cladding around the windows there. And it's often pictured with that other iconic landmark of the city, The Transamerica Pyramid just down the street here. Well, the Sentinel Buildings has had many tenants over the years, but since the early 1970s, it's been home to film director Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Company. So if you go into the cafe on the ground floor of the building, you'll see the walls are covered with photos from the movie business. And this plaque on the outside remembers some of the classic films that have been edited, written, or sound mixed here like Godfather Part One and Two, and Apocalypse Now. And it also remembers some of the famous people that have worked inside like George Lucas and my favorite, Werner Herzog. In the basement of the building, right underneath the cafe there is the private screening room of Mr. Coppola. Right at the top of the building there's a private apartment, and a very nice one too, I should think. And on the floors in between and that's where the creatives are beavering away on the next big movie idea.
