4 Balance Place

Balance Place

Balance Place
This little street called Balance Place is probably one of the shortest streets in San Francisco. And it takes its name Balance from a ship that is buried right beneath us here. The Balance docked here right against Jackson Street back in 1849 when there was no street, rather, then Jackson Street was a wooden wharf sticking out into the waterfront here. The Balance is one of about 44 ships known to be buried beneath this part of the city. So the street got its name from the ship buried beneath it, and the ship got its name during the Civil War in 1812 when the Americans captured her from the British Navy. And they renamed her The Balance because in effect she really was the balance for a ship that they'd already lost to the British.
