The Sun Sing Center

The Sun Sing Center
Just across the street here we can see the Sung Sing Center, which is a small little shopping arcade. There's a little jumble of shops and stands inside. But back in the 1920s, it was a magnificent theater called The Mandarin. Inside they've done all sorts of Cantonese operas. The popularity of the Cantonese opera started to decline in the ‘30s and ‘40s and they started showing movies here instead. The theater itself, The Mandarin, appeared in one really nice movie The Lady from Shanghai starring Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth. So we're at the back of the shopping arcade and they have all sorts of stuff here and a little bit of interesting ambient music. Right behind this here, we can see the old archway of the theater. It's the last remaining bit of the theater that used to frame the stage. Where we're standing now, it must have been where the seating was, and more or less where Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth would have been sitting in this climax of the film where there's a huge plot twist revealed, but you're going to have to watch the movie yourself to find out what happened.
