The Market District

The Market District
While Grant Avenue has all the impressive Chinese-looking buildings, it's this section of Stockton Street right here, between Jackson and Pacific down there, has a bit more of a local flavor to it, especially if you come at the end of the day, around 5 o'clock on the weekdays or lunchtime Saturday. That's when the local Chinese come to the shops here to buy their fresh produce. It's a little bit too fresh sometimes for a vegan like me. But it's like the Cantonese say, they have an expression, "We eat everything on the ground with four legs, except for the tables and chairs." At least the tables and chairs are safe. We're outside of Liang's Fish Market here, and we can see the guys unloading fresh fish from the truck. And fish is a very important part of the diet here in Chinatown because most of the American-Chinese can trace their roots back to the Guangdong Province of China, which is right on the coast. And of course, they're used to eating a lot of fresh fish.
