Eastern Bakery

Eastern Bakery
The Eastern Bakery here is famous for its Chinese moon cakes. And they're typically in this part of the Chinese Moon Festival which happens during the autumn to celebrate the year's harvest. During this festival period, the Eastern Bakery here can produce up to 20 to 30,000 moon cakes every day. So if we take a look in the window here, we can see the Chinese moon cakes. They're quite dense little pastries with different sorts of fillings and they’ve got a vegetarian one back there. And in the middle, they always have these egg yolks so that when you cut the cake in half, it looks like little moon in the middle. The moon cakes became associated with the Chinese Moon Festival back in the 14th century when there was a rebellion in China against the oppressive ruling Mongols. The rebels organized themselves by passing around secret messages they would hide inside of the moon cakes. They told the Mongols they were just gifts for the Chinese Moon Festival. So ever since then, the cake's been a very important part of the festival.
