The city of San Francisco was actually all started by an Englishman back in 1835 right on this very spot. Before him, of course, there were Spanish here in the 1700s, and also the Mexicans who took control in 1821, but they just had a few missions dotted around the peninsula. And back when San Francisco was all countryside here, it was the Englishman, Mr. William Richardson, who built this first settlement right on this spot in 1835. That's what the little plaque here commemorates. Being an Englishman, of course, he decided to name it after his favorite local tea, Yerba Buena. Of course, that name would later change to San Francisco.
