The Diamond District

The Diamond District
In this block between 5th and 6th Avenues, we can find some 2000 jewelry businesses, like this one here. You can also find a lot of different nationalities but the traditional majority has been eastern European Jews, and they arrived in New York in the Second World War, escaping the Nazi persecution in Europe and theybrought with them some useful skills for the diamond trade too, like their expertise in cutting, setting, andpolishing diamonds. And today, some 90% of the diamonds that enter the United States, pass through thisone single block. The Orthodox and the Hacidic Jews brought some interesting vocabulary to the trade. For example, youdon’t want to buy any shlock, because this is actually second-rate merchandise, and if someone calls you afeinschmecker, that literally means you're a fine sniffer or a connoisseur with expensive taste. But things arenot looking so good if you're called a shtinker, because a shtinker is a person who never pays.
