3 The Daily News Building

The Daily News Building

The Daily News Building
The Daily News building here was built in 1930 as the headquarters for the New York Daily News and they stayed here right until 1995. Back when the building was constructed, this was right on the edge of town here and they picked this out of the way location because they wanted to house the print machinery here as well as the journalists and the writers, that, of course, would be much too noisy for the neighbors downtown. So if you take a look at the building itself, we can see that the first 10 floors are a little bit fatter than the rest of the building, that’s of course, to house all that print machinery. Inside the lobby of the Daily News building here we can see the world's largest indoor globe, some 12 feet in diameter and on the floor around it here, we can see marked out directions and distances to many cities around the world. If you take a closer look at the globe itself, we can see it's meticulously hand-painted and set on an angle, exactly the same as the planet Earth itself. When they were preparing to film Superman the Movie starring Christopher Reeve, they were on the lookout for a building that could serve as the Daily Planet - that was the newspaper, of course, where Clark Kent worked - and they needed a building with a globe inside and a helicopter pad on the roof. So the Daily News building here turned out to be perfect. It's got a whopping great globe right here in the lobby and on the roof, it's very flat so they could easily turn it into a helicopter pad for the film. The helicopter pad was so important because if you remember the movie, a helicopter crashes right into the top of the building - is hanging right over the edge - and Margot Kidder, who plays Lois Lane, she's slipping out of the helicopter, hanging on for dear life, screaming, “Help”. Right at that moment, Clark Kent comes right out of these doors here, looks up to see the scene, takes off his glasses, rips open his shirt, and flies off to the rescue. It's quite a good view up there today, but if you want to see a picture of the real Superman, you can take a look at the lobby.
