14 St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral

St Patrick's Cathedral
Saint Patrick's here was the largest cathedral in America when it first opened in 1879. And over the years it's grown to consume the entire city block here. If you take a walk around to the back of the block, and look up to the windows of the cathedral, you can find two weird creatures crawling up there. Their exact identity and purpose remain a bit of a mystery. But there are some theories. Some people claim that it's a pig-like creature. I think these people never went to the countryside because it doesn't look like any pig I've ever seen. Perhaps a more likely theory is that they are gargoyle-like demons that are crawling up from the bowels of hell. Here inside Saint Patrick's if you walk a bit further down and take a look up to the ceiling, you'll see some red objects hanging down. And these are actually hats of the former cardinals of the cathedral. And there used to be a tradition where each new cardinal would be awarded one of these hats by the Pope at the start of their service here. Well when the cardinal died, his hat would be hung above his tomb in the cathedral until it turned to dust, symbolizing how all earthly things eventually disappear.
