The World Trade Center Site

The World Trade Center Site
The World Center Complex used to be comprised of seven tower buildings, the most iconic of which of course were the Twin Towers. The tallest buildings in all the world when they opened in 1972. Of course, all of those towers were destroyed in the attacks of September 11 of 2001. And today, in the exact footprints of where the Twin Towers used to stand, we can find two deep reflecting pools surrounded by waterfalls. Those waterfalls are the largest man-made waterfalls in all of the United States of America. They were designed not just to look beautiful, but also to shield the site from noises of the surrounding city. There are over 400 trees planted around the memorial site here. There's one special gnarly old tree right in the center called The Survivor Tree. That's because it survived the September 11 attacks. It was found amid all the rubble and debris here. It looked in really bad shape. All burnt with just one surviving branch. But the Parks Department took him away, nourished him back to health. Today he's looking in pretty good shape.
