10 Hanover Square

Hanover Square

Hanover Square
This southern tip of Manhattan that we’re in is one of the oldest and most historic areas of the whole city. But you won't find many buildings older than the 19th century here. That's because of the Great Fire of 1835 that broke out just a little bit beyond Hanover Park here. It soon swept its way through the city, so a radical but effective decision was taken to blow up the series of buildings and that acted as a kind of firebreak. But nevertheless, by the time the morning came, 600 buildings have been destroyed and the whole area between here and Broadway and the South of Wall Street was a smoking ruin.
