Washington Mews

Washington Mews
This little street here used to be a Native American trail running all the way across Manhattan Island from the Hudson River on the west to the East River on the east, of course. From 1827 Washington Square started to be used as a parade ground and then later a public park. So all the wealthy families wanted to move into this area. Of course, they needed somewhere to keep their horses. So Washington Mews here was created as a series of stables that could house the horses and also the coachmen and their families - all right behind the fancy houses lining Washington Square Park.
