8 The Spanish-Portuguese Cemetery

The Spanish Portuguese Cemetery

The Spanish Portuguese Cemetery
This little cemetery here was created for the Portuguese and Spanish Jewish community back in 1805. This was in a time when the city streets were still growing quite organically around country lanes and old native American trails. But in 1811, the commissioner's plan was drawn up. That laid out all of Manhattan Island and this regular grid of streets that we know today, all except the lower tip of Manhattan which of course was very well-developed by then already. Well, that meant that just a few years after the cemetery was opened, they put in 11th Street here which went right through the cemetery's land and just left this little triangular piece. There's still a lot of tombstones left in there today.
