14 Saint Luke's Church

Saint Luke's Church

Saint Luke's Church
St. Luke's Church here was constructed in the 1820s to serve Greenwich Village. And back in those days, Greenwich Village really was like a little village on its own and the church here was built in farm land, hence the full name of the church, St. Luke's in the Fields. If you take a walk inside and to the back of this little garden area here, you can find a thorn tree, and that's said to be one of the descendants of the ancient Glastonbury thorn in England. That's supposed to be a miraculous tree flowering twice a year, once in the spring, once in the winter. [music] When the church first opened in the 1820s, the first pastor was a chap called Clement Moore, and he's probably best known today for writing a poem that you'll probably recognize from the first lines. "It was the night before Christmas and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse."
