Jefferson Market Library
It's a public library here today, but it started out life in the late 1800s as a courthouse. It saw many curious cases over the years, but perhaps one of the most entertaining was that of Mae West. Before she hit Hollywood big time, she had her first break here in New York City starring in a play she had written herself. It was called Sex and it was a story about a prostitute angling to marry a rich man. But after it had been running for a year, the police raided the show and Mae West was put on trial here accused of corrupting the morals of the youth. In the end, she was sentenced to 10 days in prison to which she showed up in a limousine with an arm full of white roses. The whole thing in the end was a bit of a boost to her career, and of course, she went on to be a big Hollywood star. Perhaps one of my favorite lines from her is, "You only live once. And if you do it right, once is enough".
