Where we find the public library and former courthouse today right behind me there, and in the 1830s used to be a wooden fire tower some 100 feet in the air would be the watchman surveying the city looking for outbreaks of any fires. If he found one, he'd ring the bell there, give the number of times to indicate exactly where in the city the fire was occurring. Of course, the fireman would be dispatched to that area. But one time the wooden fire tower itself burnt down and was eventually replaced with a stone and brick tower that we can still see in the court building today. And the other wooden towers around the city, they were gradually replaced with these. These are the alarm posts where the public could raise fire alarms directly by pressing the button on the front.
