The Flags in Grand Park

The Flags in Grand Park
In this little park here, we can see a history of the flags of America, including the very first flag of the United States, this one, right above me here. That's the Grand Union flag from 1776. We can see the familiar red and white stripes, 13 in total, one for each of the colonies that broke away from British rule. And rather surprisingly, we can also see the British Union Jack flag in the top left corner. But that didn't hang around very long. That was soon replaced with the familiar white stars on the blue background, one star, of course, for each of the states. Since 1818, it was decided that for every state that joined the United States, they would add one star to the flag. The last addition was in 1960 when Alaska and Hawaii joined the United States. Now that's been the longest serving flag in the history of the United States, with its 50 stars, representing 50 states, are still going strong today.
