9 The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels

The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels
The cathedral here was built in 2002 at a cost of $200 million. And it's one of the largest in the world. Unlike the old European cathedrals, which often took decades or even centuries to complete, this one popped up in three years. Also, those European cathedrals used to be built next to rivers. But this one, he was built next to a river of cars, US highway 101. So we're here inside the very quiet cathedral and we can see the 36 tapestries around us depicting 136 different saints. And the artist, John Nava, had the idea to make them much more friendly and approachable than the saints you typically see inside churches. To that end, being near Hollywood, of course, he decided to hire a movie casting director to search for some ordinary people to model as saints in the tapestries. So enjoy the tapestries here. But when you leave the cathedral, keep your eyes peeled, because all those saints, they're out there walking among us. So we're in the mausoleum right underneath the cathedral. And it's quite a labyrinth down here. There are 1,300 crypts, and 5,000 spaces for cremated remains. Some famous people here as well, like just around the corner, one of my favorite actors Gregory Peck. Interred inside this tomb are the relics of St. Vibiana. She lived in the third century, was brought from Rome to Los Angeles in 1854, of course a long time before this cathedral. Not much is known about her life. That's lead some people to call her, "The Patron Saint of Nobody's."
