The Biddy Mason Monument

The Biddy Mason Monument
Biddy Mason was born into slavery in the 1800s. When she was 18 she was given away as a wedding present to a southern couple. And this wall here tells the story of her life. Biddy's owners decided to move all the way from Mississippi to California, right across the country. And poor Biddy. She had to walk the whole distance behind the wagon train. But when she arrived in California, she found out about the law here banning slavery. Her owners did too, and they tried to leave the state for fear they would lose all their slaves. Luckily the sheriff found about this and blocked their passage. Biddy was able to go the courts, and win her freedom.Once she became free, she was able to work as a midwife. Helped a lot of people in the community over the years. Was able to save up her money. Became the first African American to buy their own property in Los Angeles. And here we can see the deeds.
